Hey Fareast, I found you again! (tracked you here from DKos).

My new Thinkpad came "pre-broken" ie with Vista installed, last week and I got Kubuntu Hardy with KDE 4 up and running right away.

It absolutely baffles me at how many OEM vendors "recommend" Vista products to the point of the average end-user being convinced that this is the best they can expect from their brand-new fifteen hundred dollar laptop or computer. But it does give me hope that the more than casual user will be able to see KDE 4's awesome new interface as a viable alternative. Even though folks who've been around and have grown used to Windows-like performance and behaviors, the most recent Linux distros are really starting to pull in a new generation of users--my kids naturally respond to the widget-style of doing things on the desktop. So much so that I'm repurposing an old system I thought was about ready to be a brick in the landscaping into a Xubuntu-based Sugar machine for them.

Glad I tracked you down again--I'm feeding your blog. :)

Microsoft was under pressure to "get Vista out the door". It appears that rush may have had something to do with its less than stellar performance, both technically and in the marketplace. If the Vista debacle signals an intransigent corporate think-set, which I believe it does, then I expect their next operating system to become known as "Windows 7 Years".

[...] MIB Live Games is a treasure trove for Linux gamers; at last count over 100 games, 48 in arcade alone. As it is based on Mandriva 2008, the setup (and possible installation) are a breeze; to say that everything is included out of the box on this remaster of Mandriva 2008 ‘One’ would be an understatement indeed. It can be installed or used as a liveDVD (3.4GB); as there was already a Mandriva on my test box I just ran it in liveDVD mode, and even using an underpowered Intel video card all the 3D compiz-fusion eye candy and games worked flawlessly. Not that I tried every one of the games. Heh. Read more …. [...]

Hi BillyB,

I think Mplayer does not have after-compilation language selection. The language selection is made at compile time, so you can't basically change the language of MPlayer.

This was being worked on. Either they have to provide 1 MPlayer package for each Mplayer language, or make it only in English or Turkish. They choose to make it in Turkish as the primary group of users are Turkish for the moment.

When MPlayer developers solve this problem, I'm sure Pardus developers will integrate it into the distro.

Regards...

I find the distro very good,..
only gripe is that Mplayer has Turkish text in its menu's although I installed the English version

deserves to be higher up Distrowatch rankings than at 52nd place
Should be in top 15

Here's another thing that a lot of people are shocked to learn: Updates occasionally undo the fixes you implement on the advice of your peers on the forums, especially if they involve altering the /boot/grub/menu.lst or rc.local files. So there you are, thinking you've finally tweaked your system to perfection, and then in a flash the old problems are back!

The best advice that I could give new users: Create a text file called "Installation notes" or something and use it as a journal of all changes you make, including the locations and names of files, URLs of helpful pages on the web, arcane commands used in terminal, and just about anything else that you might not remember a month from now.
