Hungry? How ’bout a quacker?

In other news, a Denver man has been arrested for ripping the head off a duck and threatining to eat it. Simply because he was hungry. Well and drunk. Never a good mix if you’re a duck I guess. A guest at a hotel in St. Paul, MN, ripped the head off of one of the hotel ducks and said

I’m hungry. I’m gonna eat it.

So, um, yea.

don’t Forget!

ACK! I know! I completely forgot about World Alzheimer’s Day last Friday (September 21st!). I’ve written before about how personally Alzheimer’s has affected my family and unlike most issues out there this one will affect almost everyone in some way (I bet you, yea you, know someone affected by Alzheimer’s). I was supposed to remind everyone to have a Purple Party in order to raise awareness and donations for Alzheimer’s research. Well, I want you to know its not too late!

Make plans this weekend for a purple party. Ask your friends, co-workers and family to donate to the Alzheimer’s Fund. If you throw a party, register it on actionalz.org. You’ll be able to create a page for your party, your friends can donate directly on the site and if you agree to raise at least $150 you get a free party kit (which rocks!). Also, the The Harrah’s Foundation is matching EVERY contribution made in the month of September, so you better hurry, September ends on Sunday!!

Throw a party, get the word out! DON’T FORGET!!

Backups are a headache!

At work we have a fairly robust backup system that first backups to disc and then it copies it to tape. Its also set to go through every month and archive stuff that has not been accessed in over 6 months and the remove it from the filesystem to clean up space (we’re a printing company, so the files are sometimes fairly large and my 2tb storage lasts about 6 months). It has not been working properly since, well, ever and I have been working constantly to get it right. Just when I think I have it, something else pops up and proves me wrong.

This past week has been no exception.

The server says that certain files are there. The backup system says that certain files are there. However, when I try to restore them or access them, I am unable to pull them up (even though it appears they are there and taking up space!). I know its not a permissions issue, the permissions are set wide open on the directory in question. I think it has to do with another aspect of the restore process, but I don’t know for certain. Sometimes, I think it would be easier if we did not have computers at all. AT ALL!

Bitter Sweet Ending

Well, the Friday Night Firework series at Turner Field is done for the season, unless by some strange miracle of chance the Braves can pull it out and gain a playoff spot. I’m not holding my breath. In March, we were itching for opening day. The start of a new season, 14 shows spread across five months. By the 4th of July, we were in a steady rythm, already counting down the games until last nights game. With the heat of August, we were ready for the season to be done.

Its not that the work is hard or the pay mediocre (because the work is hard, but the pay is worth it), its just that 5 months of watching the Atlanta Braves play ball as they do (not really as one whole team, but as a couple of teams that just happen to be in the same uniform) gets a little tiring. If the Braves were a ball team like they were in the mid-90’s then maybe, we wouldn’t be looking for the end of the season. Instead, we get a team that has all the pieces of the puzzle, they just don’t always know how they fit together (have you seen the atrocity they call a bullpen?).

Anyways, we made it through another season, only one canceled show (due to wind and not rain…) and no one was hurt (thankfully). We’re glad for the break, but come January, we’ll be ready for the season to start. For now, its on to Thrashers (love hockey, live thrashers!), Hawks and a myriad of other events for us.

First Boots

I started backpacking when I was about 11. I got my first (and so far only…) pair of real hiking boots when I was fourteen. A pair of vasque sundowners that have been resoled once so far and are approaching the end of their life (almost 20 years of use!) but the pair I remember most is my father’s pair of Danner boots.

He had a pair of leather danner boots that he took the best care of (watching him take care of his Danner boots is how I learned to take care of my own boots). Making sure the leather was nik-waxed before every trip, cleaned, dried. They lasted him almost as long as mine have lasted, though he opted not to get them resoled, he bought a new pair of Danners because he knows from experience the quality that goes in to a pair of their boots.

Its funny the memories we remember, isn’t it?

Not Invited

My youngest brother is getting married this weekend and my family (me, my wife and children) are not invited. We had a personal falling out and things have never been quite the same between the two of us. Oh, we’re cordial to each other at family events but contact is for the most part, limited. Amy suggested today that I should go and sit in the back during the ceremony and leave before the reception. I wouldn’t feel right. I wasn’t invited, I’m not going.

Family feuds like this aren’t (unfortunately) uncommon and often times they last for ever (or for a while). I’m hoping this doesn’t become a permanent issue between the two of us. By the way, if anyone is in Kennesaw tomorrow and you want to help me lay corner round to finish the floor let me know…. :)

Need a Sign?

Ever had a garage sale? How’d you make your yard signs advertising it? If you’re like most people you cut a piece of cardboard from a box that was still in your basement from when you moved and you scribbled (or you had your wife write it) the details of the garage sale (location, time, dates) then tacked it to a garden stake. Right? Imagine how much better your sale could have been if you had used professionally printed yard signs from BuildASign! Cool, stylish and more noticable then most of the usual corner offerings your sale would be the talk of the town (or at least the neighborhood!)

toilet repair!

In every epic tale of good over evil, David vs. Goliath, Sith Lord vs. Jedi, the Good Guy usually triumphs. My most recent battle luckily ended with me slaying my Goliath. No, it wasn’t a one eyed monster come to take my children or even an intruder in my house. It was a simple, brass bolt that kept the tank on the toilet. As you can see from the photo though, it wasn’t quite brass any more (it was more a green sludgy color…).

What should have been a simple toilet repair (I was changing out the plunger thingy that keeps the water in the tank and the ball thingy that opens the water line to fill back up the tank) turned in to a nightmare that took almost three hours to complete. The job should have taken under an hour from start to finish and if all three bolts had come off like the first two, would have been done in under 30 minutes.

I’ve done it before, its simple. Turn off the water to the tank, flush the toilet to mostly drain the tank, disconnect the water line from the tank (have plenty of towels, bucket, sponge… on hand), remove brass bolts and remove the tank from the toilet. Replace hardware inside tank, place tank back on toilet, put *new* brass bolts in place and tighten down (not so tight as to crack the porcelain). Reconnect water line according to type and turn water back on. BAM! Providing I put everything on in the correct order, no leaks, quiet toilet (before it was leaking like a sieve and running constantly!).

That was not the case last night. Apparently, the rubber gasket around one bolt had a crack, split, defect or something and it was allowing water to slowly (ever so slowly) to leak on to the bolt. The nut was rusted tight. The slot for the screwdriver was corrodid beyond belief. I sat there for close to an hour with a hacksaw blade (wrapped in a hand towel because I couldn’t use the actual saw…) sawing away at the bolt between the tank and the bowl. Finally after much rocking, sawing, cursing, swearing and general frustration, I was able to break the bolt in half and I found the green slimy mess. After that, it was cake!

Maybe next time I’ll call the Colonel!

Huckabee for Prez?

I’ve received a couple of emails so far this political season regarding a candidate for the republican nomination (I vote republican though I tend to be more libertarian). Mike Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas and a decent bass player wants your votes. So far, unless Thompson comes up with something earth shattering, he’d going to receive mine.

He’s christian (did you see his excellent response to the question of evolution, he believes in the fair tax and he seems to be a pretty down to earth, normal guy. Could that be so bad for the country? He believes in smaller government, letting people be people and in putting the country back on the right path.

As governor, he helped bring Arkansas back in school education with some good reforms, he brought tax reform to the state and he implemented programs that benefited children across Arkansas as well. I think he’s at least worth looking at when it comes to picking the next leader of our country. What do you think?

Kville on Fox

Ok, so I caught the last part of the premiere this week of K-ville on Fox. In all, it looks like a good addition to their power line up of Dramas (Bones, House, 24, prison break). What I don’t know is if it will keep me tuning in like StandOff was starting to. The premise behind the show is two tough cops in New Orleans work to bring some sense of control and normalcy back to the city still struggling after Katrina.

We learn that one of them was abandoned by his last partner during the storm and is working to over come issues of trust and the other is an ex-army ranger (we learn at the end of the premiere that he was actually in a New orleans Prison during the storm and has decided to clean up his life) who has come back to help the city out. The action is good, the bad guys in the first episode was a rich white girl and her band of army thuggs. I only hope that its not a re-occuring theme to see the “white man” as the bad guy in every episode. That would be very disappointing. I’m going to try and tune in next week as well.

Legal Trouble?

OJ is at it again. This time, for armed robbery and there’s a large question about whether or not the guy can get a fair trial (especially with everything that has happened in the past). For his sake, I hope he gets a top quality lawyer, maybe even someone like the Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorneys | California DUI Lawyers | Criminal & DUI Law Specialists. These guys are good. They’re in the top 5% among US Law Firms and since Simpson is financially challenged these days, he might not be able to afford the Crack(ed) team of lawyers he had last time. He can contact them any time day or night (especially if he sees someone planting evidence…) for a consultation.

I bet that the LACDA’s (isn’t that catchy?) could get him off. Besides, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

You can even specify which sites are work, play or other. How cool is that?

Democrat Party?

There’s been a movement among the democrat party to move away from the name “Democrat” to liberal and now progressive. They all mean the same thing really, but I came across a reason for this move this morning while reading the Boortz Neuze Blast for today.

Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation takes a look at the founding fathers of our country, the influences on them and the dynamic between them. It promises to make a pretty good read and I’ve already ordered (a used copy) a copy of the book to read. But the interesting thing is a quote from the book that boortz posted today:

… the term “democrat” originated as an epithet and referred to ‘one who
panders to the crude and mindless whims of the masses.

If that isn’t accurate, I don’t know what is when it comes to describing the Democrat/Liberal/Progressive/Communist party in this country. Do you?

Play the Market!

When my grandfather passed away two years ago, I received a large chunk of stocks in an account at SmithBarney. They were good solid stocks that he had selected and were providing a decent stream of income for him to live on. I wanted to see if I could do better, if I could make more money with the stocks. Unlike most of the rest of the family, my stocks are still at SmithBarney and I’ve done ok (I’ve made my share of mistakes but there have been some good moves as well). While I have a financial Planner at SmithBarney, I think I finally found a good tool for managing my stocks.

MyWallSt.net is a social network of sorts for investors, where you can try your hand at investing for fun (well, for the chance to win 1k cash!), learn and trade tips and generally find out what others believe when it comes to the market. Having created an account, I was quick to log in to the rookie challenge section and begin making some purchases, we’ll see how I do. I do like the idea of a site like this, trading tips with people and finding out what works for them is better for me than reading the business section or listening to Cramer every night (he gets kind of tiring after a while). Not only that but trade magazines, news papers and even other online sites can be out dated soooo quickly these days (have you watched the market on a day when the Fed has lowered or raised the interest rate?), that having the real time help of “friends” online would be beneficial to anyone.

I’ll let you know how well I do with their rookie challenge (maybe there’s a widget for my blog…).

KEEPYOUSAFE.COM ANNOUNCES OPENING OF 10,000th ONLINE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX(SM)

Westchester, NY – September 19, 2007

KeepYouSafe(SM) (http://www.keepyousafe.com), the leader in providing secure, easy to use, online vital record storage for consumers and businesses, today announced that it has surpassed the 10,000 Online Safe Deposit Box milestone and has recently doubled the capacity in its North American and European facilities to keep up with demand.

“We are thrilled to announce that we recently opened our 10,000th Online Safe Deposit Box. This milestone demonstrates that people really trust KeepYouSafe to protect their most important documents, legal records, and other vital information” said Eric Wolbrom, CEO of Information Survival, the company behind the Online Safe Deposit Box.

“Don’t confuse KeepYouSafe with a backup service. Our service has been built to ensure maximum security and privacy at all times; in fact we have more security than most online banks. Think of KeepYouSafe as a Safe Deposit Box inside the vault at your bank where you might keep your birth certificate or insurance policy, as opposed to a traditional backup service which is more like the Self Storage place where you put a few boxes and your old coffee table”, Wolbrom says.

The company believes that everyone should have the peace of mind that comes from knowing their vital records are protected. KeepYouSafe offers a free Online Safe Deposit Box sized to store the most important information, and large-sized boxes are available for only $4 per month.

About KeepYouSafe.com

KeepYouSafe.com provides Online Safe Deposit Boxes to consumers and businesses to securely store important records and other information and be able to access those stored records from anywhere, at any time, via the internet.

The personal information stored in an Online Safe Deposit Box is available to the box’s owners only, unless individual box owners choose to grant access to family members and/or trusted friends. Each box’s contents are protected by the same strong encryption and other security technologies used by the U.S. military to secure “top secret” rated data and communication.

The KeepYouSafe Online Safe Deposit Box service is provided by Information Survival, LLC. The service launched in January 2007 and was designed and developed by a team of certified security professionals with decades of deep experience in keeping critical data safe and secure.

Information Survival LLC is a privately held security company based in New York.

Media Inquiries: media@keepyousafe.com
General Inquiries: support@keepyousafe.com

I personally think things like Keep you Safe are GREAT for people who travel often but don’t always want to lug a laptop around. This way you can access your documents where ever you are. There are two options, a free version with a limit on the amount of things you can up load and a four (4) dollar a month option which gives you more space. Either way its a great Online Safe Deposit Box for your important documents or emails.
